Fablehaven --Tayan

As Guest Review week comes to a close, I have asked my new friend Tayan to finish off the week for us with a review of her favorite book Fablehaven.

                                                          Hi friends!!

I'm Tayan, you may know me from INSPIRED by Tayan! (inspiredbytayan.com)

I am so honored that Abby asked me to guest review on her absolutely amazing blog. Abby, you are such an incredible girl! Thank you for doing what you do, I know I benefit so much from your blog, and I know everyone else does as well!!

Today I thought I would review one of my all time favorite books, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull!

I personally LOVE all of the Fablehaven books, but my review is about the first book in the series.

For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world.  Enchanting?  Absolutely! Exciting? You bet.  Safe?  Well, actually, quite the opposite . . .

Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven.  Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischevious satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies.  However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives.  To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.
(summary from brandonmull.com)

I love Fablehaven so much. It is action packed, well written, excited, and it's one of those "on the edge of your seat" books. (Who doesn't love those?!)

Something I think that is really awesome in this book, it's one of the main reasons I love it so much, is the love between family. Fablehaven makes it very clear that family comes first. The characters in this book are all very close and they depend on and trust each other. I think that that has been lost in a lot of recent books. (Hunger Games , Divergent, etc.) Recent popular books seem to teach youth that they don't need anyone and should be 100% independent. They teach youth not to trust or love anyone and to only rely on ourselves. That makes me so sad because it's not true at all! Books should teach us to love unconditionally and keep what matters most our number one priority. That's something I really love about the Fablehaven books and something I think Brandon Mull does an excellent job with.

All 5 Fablehaven books are 100% clean. There is some violence but it is minimal and still totally clean. These books teach good values and are so fun, I'd recommend them to anyone.

Rate: PG

Nitty Gritty:
Like I said, Fablehaven is totally clean. It is a fun book for any age! The violence is clean and simply adds action to the book.

Thank you all SO much for reading! And thanks to Abby again for letting me guest review for you all!

Please check out my blog if you don't read it all ready!

Yours,
tayan xoxo

Everest -- Matt

After some technical difficulties, SATURDAY'S review is finally up, you can read it below :-) A big thanks to Matt Bidstrup for writing it!!!!

Here is his review, I hope you like it!
Everest, by Gordan Korman

Gordan Korman creates a masterful adventure that takes a group of young teenagers high up into Earth's atmosphere, in a bid to be the youngest human to climb Mount Everest. Led by climbing legend Cap Cicero, the team goes through the very difficult adventure of attempting to stand on top of the world.
This trilogy is a super fun, fast, and easy read that all ages can enjoy. No cussing, drug abuse, or any bad scenes, but still very fast paced and intense. Legend -- @books_reviews_girls

TODAY'S REVIEW IS BY @BOOKS_REVIEWS_GIRLS
Legend by Marie Lu

In a future US that has been divided into the Republic and the Colonies, two separate countries that are fighting one another constantly, there is a boy and a girl named June and Day. Day is the Republic's most wanted criminal, while June is their top fighter. June and Day only meet when June's brother is killed and Day is the one believed to do it. But they soon find out what really brought them together, and the lengths the Republic will go to to keep its secrets.

So, Legend by Marie Lu is awesome. It's really good, except that they use the capital "G" word (if ya know what I mean) a few times and its sad because a lot of good characters either die or turn evil. So it's kind of PG-13 but still pretty awesome and cool beans.

The Hobbit -- Marissa

Today's review in GUEST REVIEW WEEK is:
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien reviewed by Marissa Fuller

"'Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!' he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb."
Ok so I have read this book twice niw, and it never ceases to thrill me! I love following along with Tolkien's maps, and obviously just reading the story in general. It is a wonderfully engaging book, and definetly a good read ;)
Bilbo Baggins is a respectable hobbit living life in the shire--- a quiet, unadventurous life, thank you very much.  In fact, adventures don't even cross his mind; at least, not until Gandalf shows up.  Bilbo suddenly finds himself thrown into a very large adventure indeed-- and without a pocket hanker chief, too, if you don't mind!  Accompanied by thirteen dwarves (and occasionally Gandalf) Bilbo confronts trolls, orcs, elves, and a dragon, all in an effort to reclaim the lonely mountain Erebor and restore the dwarves to their rightful home.  Will Bilbo be able to make it there and back again without too much trouble, or will unpredicted enemies keep him from returning to his beloved home?

Okay, so I really, really loved this book!  As it is meant to be a children's story book, Tolkien manages to keep it very clean.  There is one instance of the 'h' word (with the h cut off at the beginning) and, I couldn't find it, but I believe there may be an instance of the 'd' word.  There is a bit of violence, mainly because of the orcs, but like I said, it is a children's story and Tolkien keeps it well focused on the adventure and experiences of Bilbo.  There are also a couple of scary/intense scenes, but they don't have any awful, terrible content.  Beer is mentioned a little and drunk by some of the characters as well, and there is some smoking.  Personally, I was very comfortable reading this book, (compared to the movie it's definetly PG) but for a book, the mild language and drug use make it PG-13. I highly recommend this read!
Rate: PG-13
Mild language and drug use; little violence and intense/scary scenes
Good or Goodbye:  GOOD

Nitty Gritty:  Like I mentioned, there are about two cuss words, the d and the h word, as well as a little bit of name calling.  The orcs present a little violence in the book, but Tolkien usually keeps it very short and doesn't go into gory descriptions. Some of the characters drink and smoke, including Bilbo, but it is not often.  There are a few intense scenes, including characters such as Gollum and the orcs, and the dragon.

Throne of Glass -- Grant

IT'S DAY 3 OF GUEST REVIEW WEEK, AND TODAY'S GUEST REVIEWER IS GRANT!
The Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

"In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world."

Throne of Glass- GOOD
Rate- PG13
Violence--- The book follows an assassin, so be prepared.
Romance--- Sex References, though not explicit mention.
Overall---
This book is probably the single greatest Fantasy novel I have ever read. I'm not usually a Fantasy-type reader, (or one for romance,) but this book has both and I LOVED it. It is written with teenagers in mind, and is the first book with a love triangle that I'm not disgusted by. The plot is unique, original, and very deep, with unexpected twists all over. The only thing I would be worried about is the violence. The main character is the world's greatest assassin, and although I would have liked it better had Sarah J. Maas not included so much violence, but amazing nonetheless. I had this book recommended to me by a friend, and after skeptically picking it up I am now obsessed with the whole series. Three books are currently out, with more to come, and I can't wait.

The Hourglass Door -- Jocelyn

The Hourglass Door by Lisa Magnum
Review by Jocelyn Hall

"Book one of its trilogy, I love this book! It's a cute, clean teen romance.

Abby's Senior year of high school is going according to plan: good friends, cute boyfriend, and college applications in the mail. But when Dante Alexander, foreign-exchange student from Italy, steps into her life, he turns it upside down. He's mysterious, and interesting, and unlike anyone she's ever met before. Abby can't deny the growing attraction she feels for him. Nor can she deny the unusual things that seem to happen when Dante is around. Soon Abby finds herself drawn into a mystery whose roots reach into sixteenth century Florence, and she uncovers a dangerous truth that threatens not only her future but the lives of those she loves.

Its a fun, mysterious novel with time travel, a love story and everyday teenage life. There is one violent scene when Zo stabs Dante but its not graphic so you should be good. Kissing occurs but again its totally clean and quick. I really enjoyed this book and its thrilling plot will definitely keep you hooked.

Rate: PG
Its a teen book (high school and such) but no cussing and nothing inappropriate.
I encourage reading the entire series as well!"

The Tigers Curse -- Kate

It's Guest Review Week! I just want to give a big thank you to all who participated!
Our first review is by the fabulous Kate Pierson. And guys, before you read her review... I would like to say something about Kate. Right now Kate is battling cancer. I don't actually know her, but she has inspired me so much by her positive attitude and outlook on life. I would personally like to wish her the best, and to send my love and support to her. I encourage you all to do the same :)

Here's her review:

"Tigers Curse (The Tigers Saga #1)
By Colleen Houck

The Tigers Saga has been my favorite series for as long as I can remember. To me it has the perfect elements a story needs to be great. Let me first tell you, you will fall in love with the male love interest and you won't be able to help it. This book is probably more on the girly side of things, but some men have liked it too. Here is the preview from the back of the book--

Passion. Fate. Loyalty.

Would you risk it all to change your destiny?

The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she’d be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year-old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world. But that’s exactly what happened. Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.

Tiger’s Curse is the exciting first volume in an epic fantasy-romance that will leave you breathless and yearning for more. I don't know about you, but I don't like to read straight romance books. I like there to be a plot other than the romance. This book is a page turner.
I should probably tell you that most of the book takes place in India, where the focus is breaking the curse, that has a lot to do with Indian mythology. There is some talk of Hinduism and Buddhism.
Good or Goodbye?
GOOD
Rate? PG-13

Nitty Gritty-
There are a few swear words, the d and h words I believe. It is very infrequently though, like in the 400 page book, there is only 3 or 4. There is some kissing/making out scenes.  In the entire series it stays that way with NO sex scenes.

The Secret Journal of Brett Colton

Hi guys!! I'm gonna shake things up a bit...if you want a good tear-jerker, I would most definitely recommend "The Secret Journal of Brett Colton" by Kay Lynn Mangum! Here's a mini-summary: once upon a time, there was a boy named Brett Colton. When he was in high school, he was diagnosed with leukemia. During his treatment and time being sick, he expressed all of his feelings in a journal that he wrote to his then baby sister, Kathy, who he calls Kitty. Flash forward. Kathy is in high school and hates the brother who died when she was a toddler. She never even knew him, but she lives in his shadow. When she finds the journal, though, she begins to better understand and even love Brett. It's an awesome book, complete with a touch of romance!!
Rating: PG (it's from Deseret Book, so nice and clean!)
Good or goodbye: Good!

THANKS FOR READING! Hope you love it as much as I do!! :)
-Ashley

Ah okay you guys! I recently read The Secret Journal of Brett Colton & I know that Ashley already reviewed it for us, BUT COME ON... HOW COULD I NOT REVIEW IT?!?! It was soooooo good! I literally cried during the whole thing! HAha no but seriously it was amazing!

Brett Colton died of Lukemia when he was 17 years old. This is a fact that Kathy Colton has to hear about ALL THE TIME. Could her family seriously not get over him? Kathy had much more important things to talk about-- LIKE HER LIFE! She was alive.. and yet the family spent more time talking about Brett than they did finding out about her life. Like how Kathy was tutoring one of the cutest, most popular boys at school... I mean Brett died when she was just 2 years old! 14 years ago! But they talk about him as if he died yesterday. Which drives Kathy up a wall. that is until on her 16th birthday she receives a gift left from Brett. A journal... written to her. Not only does Brett's journal change Kathy's life, but it changes the people around her too.

SOOO GOOD! Honestly, I think this book changed my life a little. It definitely made me grateful for the life that I have. I can't even express how much I loved it. Definitely a MUST READ!
Now, on a side note--- This book was written by a mormon, and there is some mormony stuff in it. HOWEVER I still think that even if you aren't mormon, you will enjoy this amazing story.

THANKS FOR READING MY TWO CENTS ON THIS BOOK! :) ENJOY

One Second After

ONE SECOND AFTER by William R. Forstchen

Eleni Trapp asked me if she could review a book on my page & of course how could I refuse! Her review is on One Second After by William R. Forstchen

My dad gave me this book for Christmas this year. I love apocalyptic books and once I started reading this one I couldn't put it down! Probably because this could realistically happen.

In this entertaining apocalyptic thriller from Forstchen ( We Look Like Men of War), a high-altitude nuclear bomb of uncertain origin explodes, unleashing a deadly electromagnetic pulse that instantly disables almost every electrical device in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. Airplanes, most cars, cellphones, refrigerators―all are fried as the country plunges into literal and metaphoric darkness. History professor John Matherson, who lives with his two daughters in a small North Carolina town, soon figures out what has happened. Aided by local officials, Matherson begins to deal with such long-term effects of the disaster as starvation, disease and roving gangs of barbarians.

I thought this book was amazing. There is definitely a bit of language but no major swearing. Due to the topics this book covers there are some graphic scenes but nothing I felt was too disturbing.

Rating: PG-13
for some graphic content and swearing.
Good or Goodbye?

Penny from Heaven

JANUARY'S FOLLOWER OF THE MONTH IS ABBY HONE! Btw she has a really cool name ;-)
One of Abby's favorite books is called Penny from Heaven & she will be reviewing it for us below!

Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm.
So the book I have chosen is Penny From Heaven because it is just a very inspiring book. It's about a girl who loves baseball and always listens to it with her uncle in his truck. She's not allowed to go swimming in a public pool because her mom thinks she might get polio. One day she goes swimming and her mom gets mad. Later Penny finds out that her mom is dating the milk man, she is very upset, and wants to know more about her dad. Her dad had died in a concentration camp, because he was Italian. After she finds this out her arm gets stuck in a laundry roller and breaks it. As she is sent to the hospital, and going through a life-or-death situation, she realizes what life is all about.

I love the story because it's very inspiring and the girl acts a lot like me. It has a good theme or plot to it, and it is just a great book!!!

Sora's Quest -- HOLLY

Sora's Quest by T. L. Shreffler
Review by Holly

The summary is stolen from Goodreads. Sora Fallcrest always dreamed of adventure, but as a member of the nobility, she learned the ways of a Lady instead. Now seventeen, she is expected to choose a husband and marry. She plots to run away, but just as she is stepping out the door, she runs into a mysterious man--and is kidnapped.

Abducted from her manor, Sora is plunged into a world of magical races, arcane jewelry and forgotten lore. She finds herself at the mercy of a dangerous assassin, haunted by an even darker past. She yearns for freedom, but he won't let her go--not when her Cat's Eye necklace is the only thing that can save his life.

But the necklace itself presents a problem. It is an ancient device from the long forgotten War of the Races, and its magic has the ability to steal souls. Can Sora learn to wield its power -- or will the power wield her?
I really like like how there is  action, fantasy, and the beginnings of a CLEAN romance, all wrapped up in one book :) I do have to say, the beginning of the book was a little boring, but it got better as the plot progressed. I give it a PG rating for the fighting scenes.
The Nitty Gritty: I don't remember any cuss words, but there might be a few. There are some combat scenes, and one mildy gory part.
Good or goodbye? GOOD! Definitely worth the read!

Fablehaven-- PAYTON

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Review by Payton

Kendra and her brother are forced to spend their vacation with their grandparents the Sorensons. Kendra was sure it was going to be the most boring summer of her life. boy was she wrong.
After Grandfather Sorenson sets down some ground rules, they start noticing things aren't always as they seem. After breaking quite a few rules, they realize the level of peace and order amongst the witches , fairies, naiads, satyrs, imps, demons and so many more is very shakey ground. When these covenants are violated, a hidden evil is let loose, and Kendra must save Fablehaven and humanity, and all that's she holds dear. Kendra must find the strength to  lead the dangerous tasks ahead.
I recently had to read the series with my little sister. I fell in love with the series all over again. It amazes me the way the story weaves together. Kendra doesn't think she's ready for the journey ahead of her, but with the help of her brother and some very kind creatures, she makes it through. The only thing I didnt like in the series is the stupidity of Seth. it drove me nuts. He continuously disobeyed even when the consequences could be deadly.
I have read quite a few books with the magical twist but this one is my favorite. The way the creatures act really brings them to life. They feel humans are there for necessity, and other than that, people shouldn't bother them. The mystery keeps you asking questions (even weird ones about milk) if I could live in this book, I would be there in a second. because even though there is danger around every corner I'd remember that anything is possible when magic is involved.

The Sword -- TRISTAN

The Sword by Bryan M. Litfin
Review by Tristan

My book review will be over The Sword which is the first book in The Chiveis trilogy written by Bryan Litfin.
This series has the perfect mixture of action, adventure, and romance. Its about a world forced back to the dark ages because of a virus where two young adults figure out that the kingdom they live in is evil and they go through alot of trouble trying to fix it. The books have alot of violence in them so it's not meant for children.

The Possession -- TABITHA

Possession by Elana Johnson
Review by Tabitha

This book was really hard for me to get into in the beginning, but then I decided to just keep reading. It turned out better than I thought.
Also here is a summary of the book I got off a website:
"Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.
But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn.
This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play."
There is some kissing/making out and swearing. So really I think you can decide if it's GOOD OR GOODBYE!

The Great Gatsby-- AUSTIN

Hey guys!! sorry this is a little late, with the time differences, I got Austins review after I had gone to bed! so here's Wednesday's-
The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald
Review by Austin

Having read this book for the first time, I can confirm that there's a reason that it's considered one of the very best American novels. However, my reaction was much different than I anticipated.  I was expecting that Daisy and Gatsby's love story would ultimately yield a happy ending. I found that this is not the case, both characters are portrayed to be such shallow creatures that they inspired no pity. While I considered the characters to be emotionally stunted, that doesn't mean I was not impressed with Fitzergerald's skillful rendering. As in most forms of art, in literature it is more difficult to accurately and interestingly portray nothingness than to describe a richly endowed subject. I found Daisy to be a remarkable emotional void, and Gatsby's quest to pour all of his hopes and dreams into such a shallow cauldron only confirmed his own vapidity. One thing I love is the amazing ability Fitzgerald has to set a scene. His descriptive passages are truly poetic, and his command of word choice in unparalleled. All this made for a stimulating and delightful read.

Elantris -- LYANA

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
Review by Lyana

Elantris was a beautiful, once. It was called the city of the gods. Visitors say that the very stones glowed with an inner light. The Elantrians seemed to shine like the city their hair a brilliant white, their skin a metallic silver. They could perform magics with a bare wave of the hand. They were divinities.
Then 10 years ago something went horribly wrong. Instead of tuning people into gods they become dead look alikes and are imprisoned in the once great city regardless of the person's identity. Even the beloved prince who is the only one that can save his failing kingdom. Good!!!!! One of my top five favorite books ever. PG13 because of violence. Wish i could write a review  to show how good this book but you'll just have to read it.

The Merchant Of Death -- BAILEY

The Merchant of Death
By D.J. MacHale
Review by Bailey

“No, this was crazy. I made up my mind right there that the first chance I got, I’d get away from these nutburgers and get back to that flume thing. If it brought me here, then there had to be a way for it to get me back home. Yes, that was the answer. I was going to get myself out of here and kiss this place good-bye—with or without Uncle Press.”
-Bobby Pendragon
Bobby enjoyed a positive life, being the 14 year-old basketball star for his school team.  Everything seemed to be going perfectly on the evening before his big game, especially when his crush of many years, Courtney Chetwynde, unexpectedly came to his home and kissed him.  But soon after one of the highlights of his life, everything he knew changed.  Bobby’s fun loving Uncle Press took him to an abandoned subway where they ran into a cop.  Over short conversation, Bobby learned that Press knew the khaki uniformed cop— who was actually a cold-blooded murderer.  In a terrifying transformation Bobby, for the first time, saw the man who would attempt to destroy multiple civilizations.  Through his experiences following the meeting of this enemy, Saint Dane, Bobby was told of his mandatory role in saving all of Halla.  Bobby happened to be a traveler, like his Uncle Press, who was responsible for keeping the peace between all territories in Halla.  He had the ability to use portal-like objects known as flumes, which transported him through time and space to reach new worlds.  The first place Bobby visited was Denduron, and in his attempt to save the Milago civilization from Saint Dane, his life turned upside down.  What Bobby didn't know, however, was Saint Dane’s plan had only just begun.

Okay let’s get into my thoughts about the book.  I loved reading about Bobby’s adventures, but there are occasions when swear words are used.  All of the swearing in the book tends to appear close together for a short passage.  However, it is not frequent enough to force me to stop reading.  Another part of the book I found slightly uncomfortable is near the beginning.  The description of Bobby and Courtney kissing is short, but it is graphic enough—not horrible though—to give this book a rating of PG-13.  Overall the book is enjoyable, there are just a few parts where I became uncomfortable.  On the bright side, any bad part in the book ends fairly quickly!
Rate: PG-13
GOOD OR GOODBYE? I would definitely have to say this book is GOOD!

Nitty Gritty for Parents
This book uses swear words in a few different parts of the book.  Mainly the D and H words.
