The Maze Runner by James Dashner
First of all, does anyone think it's ironic that the book title is the Maze RUNNER and the author's name is James DASHner? Hahahah!!
When Thomas wakes up in a box, and can't remember anything other than his name, his is more than a little worried. But his worries only get worse when the box opens up to a group of boys who share his struggle. None of them can remember their pasts before the Glade. The Glade is surrounded by huge walls of stone -- a maze. None of them can escape. Not that they would necessarily want to, there are terrible creatures called Grievers outside the Glade. But when the very first girl shows up, telling a special message, things start to get a little sketchy. Even for the boys of the Glade. Now they must find a way out of the maze before they are all taken by the Grievers. Which proves to be difficult since the Gladers have been working on the maze for TWO years. Can they do it? And if they can, will the outside world really be any better?
Okay, so personally this book took me a little bit to get into. It wasn't one of those books that you pick up and are immediately glued to. However, as I read on, it definitely became that way. It really wasn't too violent-- until the end/second half of the book. Then it got pretty violent.
There weren't any cuss words, BUT they used a lot of "Glade slang". I'm not sure whether or not the "slang" are substitute cuss words, or just random words used.... but it seemed a little iffy to me. Either way, I thought it was decently clean, but definitely PG13.
If I am being 100% honest, I probably won't read the other books in the series. It was good, but not THAT good. I guess I just really didn't care for the ending. BUT I know alot of people love the series sooo it can't be all bad ;)
Rate: PG13
No real cussing, but violent
Violence Level: 6/7 out of 10
GOOD OR GOODBYE?
Um I think Good. I am a little uncertain, just because of the violence, but I think if you are 12 or older, it should be good!
NITTY GRITTY:
Like I said earlier, there isn't any real cussing-- however the Maze Runner uses words like "shank, klunk, shuck, etc" I sorta think that's like substitute cussing, which isn't great, however I would much rather read those words than real curse words... :-)
Also there was a teeny sexual part. Like not real sex, just a reference to a body part that could be a little awkward, however it isn't super graphic & doesn't use the actual word. I would liken it to Disney's crude humor that is occasionally put in.
